Time Warp Returned For An Unforgettable Two Day Weekend Filled with Top Notch Production and International Talent

After five years and much begging from techno lovers, Teksupport finally announced the return of Time Warp New York in celebration of its 25th anniversary. The event took place on November 22nd and 23rd at the New York Expo Center located in the Bronx and it was quite the event to experience. The line up was stacked with long time favorites such as Joseph Capriati, Sven Vath, Loco Dice and Richie Hawtin and even got a special and rare appearance from the legendary Ricardo Villlalobos. There were also some new additions to the line up this year like Peggy Gou, Tijana T, Avision, Mind Against and more. And not one single DJ disappointed this weekend, making it tougher to decide whether to be at Floor 1 or Floor 2. Like most attendees, I found myself running back and forth through the narrow fenced walkway to catch some of these sets.

Day 1 of this epic weekend began with Reinier Zonneveld, who became one of the most memorable sets of the weekend. There was no better way to kick off the weekend than with his track “Hard Gaan”. After taking in the amazing set design, consisting of a floating sea of bubbles, we headed over to Floor 2 for the one and only, Ricardo Villalobos. Floor 2 was significantly smaller so the plan was to get there earlier to claim a good spot. Unfortunately, we were unable to reunite with a few friends as security began limiting entry due to capacity. If you’ve ever been lucky to see Ricardo, you know that he is a wizard and there is truly no way to describe his sets. His golden-era tech house and South American flair has a crowd appeal during his rare North American shows that kept us wanting more. I was able to catch the last hour of Richie Hawtin until it was time for Amelie Lens, who is fairly new to the Time Warp family. I’ve seen Amelie on numerous occasions but this was honestly one of my favorite times seeing her. Going on until almost 7:30 am, she played tracks like “Forever Ravers” by ANNA and Miss Kitten, “The Outsiders (T78 Remix)” by Christian Cambas, and “Sissel & Bass (Perc Remix’) by Peder Mannerfelt. Time Warp brought great production and sound but I can imagine planning logistics for a show of that scale could not have been easy. There were a few logistical issues that could have been planned out in more depth like the lack of staff in coat check. Complaints from attendees on the event page claimed to have waited almost 2 hours to get coats. After 9 hours of dancing and not including the 90 minute round trip to get to the Bronx from Manhattan or Brooklyn, a large majority of people wore their coats on the dancefloor or stashed them throughout the venue on day 2.

I arrived to the opening of Denis Sulta where he started off with Patrick Topping’s “Turbo Time” and even played Deadmau5 and Kaskade’s “I Remember” which had my jaw on the floor and my Iphone up high above my head recording for my personal archives. I would never miss the amazing sounds of Peggy Gou so I made my way to Floor 2. This may have been the most fun set of the weekend playing tracks like “Yard Man”, “Starry Night” and Soulwax remix of “Work it”. She had the dancefloor in unison for those glorious 3 hours. Back at Floor 1, Maceo Plex and Loco Dice truly delivered. Loco Dice began his sunrise set with “Spin Spin Sugar” and as the end of day 2 sadly came to an end, I found myself running back and forth between Nina Kraviz and Loco Dice, trying to take in as much of each room as I could until it was time to say my final farewells.

Overall, Time Warp was such an amazing event and I would definitely be in attendance if it were announced again next year. Aside from the few logistical downfalls which can always be improved, the production was top notch and the sound was phenomenal. Teksupport has produced some of New York’s most unique and exciting parties of recent years. They have scouted the city to unearth new locations, throwing parties in submarine factories, navy yards, subterranean ballrooms and industrial warehouses, building a reputation for pairing raw spaces with world class event production and the location for Time Warp was no exception. Until the next Time Warp, I’ll be dreaming over this incredible weekend.
